Brig Gen Usman Turay, was born on 15 July 1966 in Mabuya, Koya Chiefdom, Port Loko District, in the Northern Province of Sierra Leone. He attended the United Methodist Primary School in Rotifunk, Moyamba District and Jaiama Secondary School in Kono District, Eastern Province of Sierra Leone and the Government Secondary School (Boys), Magburaka.
He holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Mathematics/Physics from the University of Sierra Leone and a Master of Arts degree in International Relations and Diplomacy from the University of Ghana, Legon.
He was enrolled into the Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces (RSLAF) as an officer cadet and was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant on 29 October 1991.
He attended the Junior Division Staff and Senior Command and Staff Courses at the Ghana Armed Forces Command and Staff
College, the Next Generation of African Military Leaders Course at the National Defence University, Washington DC, USA,
Military Observer and Advanced Planning for Integrated Mission Courses at the Alioun Blondin Beye Peacekeeping School in
Bamako, Mali.He has also attended a lot of seminars, local and international courses. He attended the Military Information Support
Operations and Psychological Operations Courses.
He has held the following appointments: Platoon Commander, Intelligence Officer, Company Commander, DAA/QMG, Pay Master, Staff Officer,and Commanding Officerat the Armed Forces Education Centrein Freetown. He was also Commanding Officer for 2 and 5 Battalions in Kenema and Freetown respectively, 3Infantry Brigade Commander in Freetown; Staff Officer Grade 1 (Commitments and Plans), Director of Defence Estates and Director of Personnel, Director of Public Relations and Information at the Ministry of Defence.He is presently the Assistant Chief of Defence Staff, Support & Logistics - Ministry of Defence. He is happily married with two daughters.
Brig Gen Turay was awarded the 50th Independence Medal in 2011.
His hobbies include reading, angling, and watching football.
