BRIGADIER GENERAL AMARA IDARA BANGURA
ASSISTANT CHIEF OF DEFENCE STAFF - OPERATIONS AND PLANS...BACKGROUND
Brigadier General Amara Idara Bangura was born on 6 April 1968 in Kenema District, Eastern Sierra Leone. He was commissioned into the Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces (RSLAF) on 18 September 1993 at the Nigerian Defence Academy, Kaduna – Federal Republic of Nigeria.
MILITARY APPOINTMENTS HELD
Brigadier General Bangura has held several appointments during his career. The most recent include; Commander 4 Infantry Brigade, Chief of Staff – Headquarters Joint Force Command (HQ JFC), Director Military Operations – Ministry of Defence (MoD), Deputy Chief of Staff – HQ JFC, Commandant Peace Mission Training Centre and Chief Instructor – Horton Academy. He was appointed as the national Pillar Lead – Operations and Security at the National Covid-19 Emergency Response Centre (NaCOVERC) and served as a Movement Control Officer – Heavy-lift Operations with the United Nations-African Union Hybrid Mission in Darfur (UNAMID) in Sudan.
EDUCATIONAL QUALIFICATIONS
He holds a Master in Arts (MA) in International Security and Strategy, Kings College London (kcl) – UK, MA in Defence Studies, kcl – UK, Post Graduate Diploma in Defence and Conflict Studies, GIMPA – Ghana, BSc (Hons) in Business Administration, Institute of Public Administration and Management – University of Sierra Leone. He is a proud member and an alumni of the rcds and kcl respectively.

Brigadier General Bangura attended the Royal College of Defence Studies (rcds), – United Kingdom (UK), Advanced Command and Staff Course (Joint Services Command and Staff College) – UK, Senior Command and Staff Course (Ghana Armed Forces Command and Staff College) – Ghana, Infantry Officer Advanced Course (Fort Benning) – United States of America, United Nations (UN) Staff Officer’s Course, (School of Peacekeeping) – India, UN Logistics Course (Kofi Annan Peacekeeping Training Centre – (Ghana), Conflict and Crisis Management Course at the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA) among others.
NATIONAL / INTERNATIONAL AWARDS
He holds the United Nations Peace Medal (UNAMID) and RSLAF’s Long Service and Good Conduct Medal. He is a veteran of the Sierra Leone Civil War (1991 – 2002). Brigadier General Bangura is also a contributor to the International Team for the Study of Security Journal, Verona – (Italy) and researcher with interest in conflicts, security and terrorism in West Africa.
