LIEUTENANT GENERAL SULLAY SESAY
CHIEF OF DEFENCE STAFF OF THE REPUBLIC OF SIERRA LEONE ARMED FORCES

BACKGROUND
Lieutenant General Sullay Ibrahim Sesay GCOR, was appointed Chief of Defence Staff, Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces (RSLAF) on 17 June 2020. An alumnus of the Africa Center for Strategic Studies, General Sullay Sesay was commissioned as an Infantry Officer on 1 st October 1991. Having an illustrious and colorful career of three decades, Lieutenant General Sesay brings with him an enormous amount of experience of holding key command and staff appointments.
General Sesay served as Platoon and Company Commander in the eleven years war in Sierra Leone, and as Contingent Commander for the Sierra Leone Sector Reconnaissance Company in Darfur, United Nations Mission in Darfur (UNAMID - 2012), Sudan, where he was decorated by the United Nations

In his distinguished military career, Lieutenant General Sesay has commanded an Infantry Battalion and Infanty Brigade and also served as Commander Joint Force Command, prior to his appointment as Chief of Defence Staff. His key staff appointments include, Deputy Chief of Staff and Chief of Staff at Joint Force Command and various staff officer appointments at the Ministry of Defence.

Lieutenant General Sesay is a graduate of the Command and Staff College, Jaji, Nigeria and the National Defense University, China. He holds a Bachelor of Social Science Degree with Honors in Economics from Fourah Bay College, University of Sierra Leone, a Master’s Degree in International Affairs and Strategic Studies at the National Defense Academy in Nigeria and a Master’s Degree in Military Science from the Peoples Republic of China.

General Sesay is happily married to Mrs. Cecilia Sesay and blessed with three (3) children, a girl and two boys.
